Hazing Prevention Week at Western Michigan University
October 12 to October 15 is Hazing Prevention Week at Western Michigan University.
Events have been and will be taking place on campus throughout the week, sponsored by StopHazing, the WMU Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the WMU Office of Multicultural Affairs for Students, the Western Michigan University Police, and the WMU Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. The series of on campus events are taking place with the hope of spreading awareness and information about what hazing is, where and how it can happen, and what to do if you see it.

Upcoming events for this campaign include:
Bingo Tuesday: Hosted by Multicultural Affairs for Students: Tuesday, October 13, 4:30PM - 6:00PM
Do-Nut Haze Tabling: Wednesday, October 14, 12:00PM - 2:30PM
The Lonely Dog with Public Safety Therapy Dog: Wednesday, October 14, 4:30PM - 6:30PM
Why is Hazing Prevention Important?: Social Media Creation with Students: Thursday, October 15
Participants in these events are given the option to take a pledge in support of hazing prevention, by visiting signing an online pledge that reads as follows:
“StopHazing’s mission is to promote safe and inclusive school, campus, and organizational environments through research, resource sharing, and the development of data-driven strategies for hazing prevention and the promotion of positive and inclusive group climates.
Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.
I pledge to:
Never participate in or condone hazing in any form.
Stand up to hazing and take action if I see or suspect hazing.
Support and protect those who come forward to report hazing.
Uphold the dignity and respect of every member in my organization and campus community.
Lead by example as a student, leader, and community member by promoting healthy group dynamics and creating safe, inclusive environments for all.

By signing this pledge, I commit to fostering a culture of belonging, safety, and accountability, and to advocating for a community free from hazing.”
At 89.1 WIDR FM, we seek to create an environment where participation is not locked behind hazing of any kind. No student should need to go through any form of harassment, humiliation, or abuse at the hands of their group’s leaders or peers just to feel accepted.
Just like our control room, we keep our walls transparent and encourage other RSOs to do the same.
