WIDR needs your help!

August 10th, 2011

Go vote for WIDR!

Greetings, WIDRites!

It’s that time of year again, the Kalamazoo Gazette’s Readers’ Choice awards! As you might guess, WIDR is competing in the “Best radio station” category. Now, ladies and gentlemen, we won this thing in 2009, but last year, 2010? That was rough. Not only did WRKR win, we didn’t even get an honorable mention! WKZO, an AM station, got more votes/love than we did. How does that even happen? We all know that just ain’t right.

Why do we want this award? Is it the prestige, the glory, the year of gloating we’d all get to do? Well, yeah, a bit. Let’s be honest, everyone likes being appreciated, but winning this means more than being able to do this to non-WIDR DJs should they attempt to throw down. In times where finances are tight all over and finding new revenue streams that fit within the ideals of WIDR is harder than ever, being able to show donors, grant makers, underwriters, and WMU that WIDR is valued by the community we serve is a major boost for the station. If you want to help WIDR and you’ve never made a donation or if you give every year, voting right now is an easy way to make things better for us. Recognition like this is way for us to increase our visibility as an asset to Kalamazoo. We’re not looking to change what we do, we just want to secure the fact that we can. So go vote!

To vote, just click on that gigantic red, white, and blue button. It will take you to the official ballot page for Arts & Entertainment, which is where we are competing. Votes are limited to one ballot per person, so no extra rounds, even if you’re from Chicago, and ballots can be submitted until 5 pm on August 15th, but please don’t wait! The sooner you vote, the less likely you are to forget, which we are all prone to do from time to time.

Thanks for keeping Radio Evolution going strong!

Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle race! *dingding*

July 25th, 2011

While the entire Midwest is thinking about the heat, many of us at WIDR are also thinking about something colder, harder, and cashier. We’re in the beginning of a new fiscal year and as long time listeners know, WIDR depends on the generosity and support of our listeners for survival. When we’re really lucky, we connect with listeners who have sweet business that they use to support us. Since that is such a big deal for us, it stands to reason that you, our loyal listeners, would want to know who’s going above and beyond to keep us rocking, so that you can a) let them know you appreciate them supporting WIDR, and b) spend your money at a business who values the same independent spirit you do. From now on, with each new underwriter, we’re going to give them a proper introduction to you. Which brings us to today’s post.

WIDR fans of all ages, we’re downright giddy to present our latest underwriter Pedal Bicycles. You’ve probably already heard their spot on the air and yes, they are just as awesome as the A-Team. Based out of a downtown space formerly occupied by a Jeep dealership, owner Tim Krone and the whole Pedal crew love people, cycling, and WIDR, and their passion for all three shows the moment you walk through the door. In fact, their love for Radio Evolution is so great, that they committed to an entire year of support! Just like the gang at WIDR, Pedal has something for everyone, all ages and levels of experience, which means that you no longer have an excuse not to ride with WIDR in parades and other jaunty public outings. Now all we need are WIDR stickers that fit on a bike and we’ll be all set. Thanks, Pedal!

It’s a sound salvation

June 7th, 2011

Once again, a dark cloud hangs over the world of college and independent radio; we’ve lost another one of our own. The announcement has been made that Vanderbilt University’s campus station WRVU is being sold by their university to Nashville Public Radio and being converted to a classical station. This isn’t the first time either. Many of you remember the shock in January when it was announce that Bay Area staple KUSF had their license sold out from under them in much the same circumstances. Though the sale is still pending for KUSF, the folks at KTRU in Houston have been living with the loss of their FM presence for months.

Many are still fighting to get their station back, and maybe WRVU will be able to do the same, but each blow to stations like ours remind us how fortunate we are to have a place like WIDR to call home, both on the air and off. Don’t forget how important it is to let people in your school, work, and community know that WIDR is vital to you and your life.

So to our fallen and struggling independent radio brothers and sisters, we salute you. Keep fighting the good fight and we’ll keep spinning the non-hits on actual vinyl.

WIDR Sliders & Brew wild success!

April 15th, 2011

This. Was. Amazing!

For those of you who missed it, the first annual WIDR Sliders & Brew event was an astounding success, it exceeded even our wildest expectations. We had a line out the door at 6 pm and the place was packed the whole night with people having a fantastic time. The beer and the food were at a whole different level than most of us are used to. It was also one of our most successful fund raisers in recent memory and that’s something we can all be proud of.

First off, we owe massive thanks to everyone at the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange, particularly Jim, Bill, and our point man Eric; their passion and excitement about this event matched ours and it never would’ve moved beyond the idea phase if it weren’t for their hard work and eagerness to do right by WIDR. They are definitely fans of ours and now we’re all fans of theirs. Next time you stop by KBE, make sure to let them know how much you appreciate them supporting the station you love. We were also lucky enough to have Jenny from Imperial Beverage on board and geeked early in the process, and she secured many of the hard-to-find brews and their brewers without batting an eye.

Who else deserves heaps of our gratitude? The brewers from Arcadia, Arbor Brewing Company, Dark Horse, Founders, New Holland, Old Hat, Paw Paw Brewing Company, and Short’s, of course! They were awesome! They brought killer beer, talked shop for hours, and generally made sure everyone a sweet time. If you were clever and early, you might’ve even scored some of the swag they brought along. When you visit them, feel free to mention your WIDR love as well.

Thanks also must go to everyone who talked about the event, passed out handbills, linked to our site and the Facebook event, or poked friends with a stick until they left the house. This event couldn’t have happened without all of the people who came out, to you we’re deeply grateful and we hope to have more events that make you just as happy as this one did.

And yes, we’ve already started planning for next year. :)
